On April 30th 1975 the communist Peoples Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) defeated the United States and the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam).
Intellectuals and westerly oriented inhabitants of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) tried for fear to rescue their valuables and assets before the communist Peoples Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) marched in. Western objects of cultural value and evidance of capitalist living were destroyed, if possible. At that time the family of Chau Tran (Qing Lian) also wiped out their business-documents, art-collection, fictional and specialized literature from the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), Hongkong and the west. More than 30 rice-sacks, each 100 kg, were plunged into rivers, additionally a large part of the early works of Chau Tran (Qing Lian), exhibition catalogues, documents and photo-material were sacrificed. The property of the family (until then owner of a forwarding company) was confiscated by the communist government. After reeducation the family-members had to do the work the new government commanded. Chau Tran (Qing Lian), former painter, lecturer of art and marine of the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) had to work as forwarding merchant and propaganda-painter in Ho-Chi-Minh-City (former Saigon). Being on a watch there was no possibility to work as a painter. Works secretly created out of longing, completed or not yet finished, were mostly destroyed immediately each time to be on the safe side. For that reason there is few material existant from the period between 1975 to 1979. In that time the family secretly prepared the escape across the seas to Australia and America, financed by hidden foreign currency and jewelry. The few surviving documents from 1949 to 1979 presented here, were hidden by the family and rescued by several family-members during successful escapes across the seas. At that time basically family-pictures, important official documents, jewelry, foreign currencies and some pictures by Chau Tran (Qing Lian) could be taken out. |
